HIS DREAM.  OUR HOPE.

First off Mr. President,  allow me to congratulate you on your magnificent victory.  A job well done that has been rewarded as is should be.

And while I know you are a very busy man setting up your new government so that you are ready to go into action from day one which is also as it should be.  But......................................I believe it would behoove you to take some time to have a very deep look at one of the most serious problems you are going to have to face from that very first day.  Namely, the war in Afganistan.  And I believe that what you should do is try, at least in your mind, to find a reason that we have troops there at all.  A reason that you would be willing to share with all of the American population.  For the great majority of the people have, like myself, not one iota of any idea why we are sending our young men and women off to die in a place very few of those same citizens can find on a map.   What was the original reason for sending troops there?  Anyone got any Idea?  I think it was sold on the fact that Osama Bin Laden was hiding out there.  Which there never was any actual proof of and even it it were so he has been long gone for quite some time.  So why are we still there?  And more to the point; why are you contemplating sending more troops there?

What is their mission?  To hunt down a Bin Laden that everyone in the world knows is not there?  Or is it to keep our ex allies, the Taliban from returning to power?  And exactly what brief does the United States have to decide who governs the people of Afganistan?

Ah, but they are tyrants I hear you cry.  And?  Are the Taliban the only tyrants on this earth?  What about our "friends" in Saudi Arabia?  Which just happens to be one of, if not the most tyranical government on this globe.  Are you planning on invading there?  I think not.  So again, why are we not only in Afghanistan but at the same time attacking our so called allies in Pakistan?  Or are you, like the thugs we have had in the White House for the past eight years, going to totally ignore International law?

Which brings us to the real question:  Do you intend to formulate the foriegn policy of the United States or do you intend to allow the war mongers in the Pentagon and the arms industry formulate it for you?  I know that you have no military experience and I am a firm believer that that is a very big plus for a president.  But you must NOT allow this lack of experience guide you down the wrong path that inevitably will lead you to accepting the advice of the war mongers that populate the higher ranks of the military and who will always recommend a military soloution to virtually any and all foreign policy crisis.  Of which there will be ample in your four years, believe me.  In fact you are being faced with one right at the moment despite your not yet having been sworn into office.  The fact that the Russian president announced just yesterday that Russia is going to install missles on the borders of NATO.

Now this is being presented as a serious case of the Russians flexing their muscles and challenging an incoming president.  Which is in fact, not the case at all.  What it really is is their response to the challange the Bush gang of thugs have already made.  The plans for the installation of our anti missle rockets right on their borders.  Something that they obviously are not going to accept.  But now they have put the ball into your court and you are going to have to respond.  And here is where you are going to have to flex your muscles and tell the Pentagon that under no circumstances will the anti missle rockets be emplaced.  As simple as that!

Of course, the McCains and the like will be all over you like stink on shit for backing down in the face of a Russian threat but allow me to bring something up that you are too young to remember but something I was very intimately involved in: The Cuban Missle crisis.  About as close to world annihilation as we have so far managed to come.  And while I am certain that you do know the "Official"details of this terrible affair, that the Russians were in the process of installing their medium range missles in Cuba and that we forced them to back off and remove them.  But what you more than likely do not know is what caused them to put them there in the first place?  It was the fact that the United States had already set up a group of like missles inTurkey, again right on the Russian border.  Nor do you probably know that while the Russian missiles were removed from Cuba with enormous fanfare and press coverage announcing our great"victory" over the evil designs of Godless Communism, hardly a word made it into the media that we also removed our missiles from Turkey as a part of the deal.  And thus the impending holocaust was very, very narrowly avoided.  An totally useless excersise of our muscle that ended in a backdown in all the meanings of the word.  This backdown was kept from the American people of course but the Russians knew damn well who had backed off and who had forced them to do so.

So do think long and hard over this and avoid another like confrontation that is being arranged by the Military powers in this country to test you and see if you can be counted on to use their suggestions in the case of any foreigen policy dispute.  For this time it could go all pear shaped as it nearly did in the Cuban affair and if that should happen the annilation of every living thing on this planet will be the inevitable result.

WHICH INCLUDES THIS LOVELY LADY ALSO!

And I believe that what you should do is try, at least in your mind, to find a reason that we have troops there at all.

Agreed!
I keep hearing of how more troops are needed in Afghanistan.
Like you, I'd like a serious answer to the question "Why?"

The only answer I keep hearing is "To defeat the religious fanatics called "The Taliban."

Well, if self interest is the priority in wars, I'd say we have fundamentalist here in the US that present a much greater threat to America than the Taliban, but we're not attacking them.

If getting Osama is the reason, then lets go get him and then leave.
Our treasury, and the blood of our troops, demand better reasons for war.

Jack B.

Thanks Jack.  And I am pretty certain that most Americans will agree with you.  The "Why" is far, far more important than the "How" when it comes to this war or any war for that matter.  And if he plans to withdraw the troops from Iraq then "Why" should we keep and add too the contingent in Afghanistan?
